Team: Boys Varsity Track
Position: Head Coach
Coach Paul Harper began his coaching career at Blue River Valley High School in the spring of 1981 when he took charge of the junior high boys track team and then followed that with becoming the coach of the junior high cross country team the next fall. In the fall of 1989 he was named the varsity boys cross country coach. He took over the varsity track position in the spring of 1991. In the fall of 1993 the girls’ varsity cross country team was fully developed and he also took on this responsibility. During his time as varsity coach he has coached a number of individuals to regional and semi state competition and county and conference champions in both cross country and track. His teams have also been county and conference champions and cross country teams have qualified for regional competition.
Prior to arriving at Blue River Valley in the fall of 1978, he graduated from Eastern (Howard) High School and from now the University of Indianapolis with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree. During his time at the University of Indianapolis he worked in the Sports Information Department at the university and weekends writing high school sports articles for The Indianapolis News. A few years after arriving at Blue River Valley he completed his Masters’ of Arts Degree at Ball State University. He has also taken further work from Drake University and completed on-line seminars through the National Federation of High School Sports. He is licensed to teach Spanish, Physical Education and Health Science and currently teaches Spanish and Health in grades 7-12.
In addition to his track and cross country duties he has coached 8th grade basketball for 9 years, spent 2 years as elementary intramural sponsor, sponsored National Honor Society and Spanish Club. He has been the public address announcer for the Vikings boys’ basketball for 36 years. He has an interest in Viking athletics and is currently the athletic historian with as well updated as possible BRV Athletic Record Book and is working on records from before the consolidation in 1965.
